U.S. Wary of Russian Double Cross on Iran Sanctions

Saturday, 02 September 2006 12:00 AM

UNITED NATIONS -- U.S. State Department diplomats tell NewsMax that despite several published reports the United States has already prepared a list of prospective sanctions on the Iranian government, nothing in fact has been prepared for United Nations Security Council consideration.

"Nothing has been prepared" confirmed one U.S. diplomat at the United Nations. The diplomat also expressed concern that Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, is now non-committal.

"We just don't know where he (Lavrov) stands," confessed the U.S. diplomat.

Russia is a permanent member of the security council and, as such, holds veto power.

Moscow is also putting the finishing touches on a $6 billion (U.S.) nuclear project in the Iranian port of Bushehr. When completed, the Bushehr nuclear power station will be among the largest in the world.

Despite the Iranian violation, the security council did not meet Friday and is not expected to convene before next Tuesday, taking a U.S. Labor Day holiday break.

Previously, the council had given Tehran until August 31 to suspend its nuclear activities or face punitive action.

"About the only penalties Tehran is paying is overtime to its nuclear workers," lamented one reporter.
