U.S. Prepared to Strike Bin Laden

Monday, 06 November 2000 12:00 AM

The statement, by State Department spokesman Richard Boucher, came amid concern by officials of the Taliban that U.S. forces were preparing to strike Afghanistan, as they did two years ago after the bombing of two U.S. embassies in Africa.

"We have made quite clear to them what we have made clear in public: that we intend to pursue this investigation wherever it leads, and we intend to take whatever steps are necessary to defend our interests," Boucher said.

U.S. law enforcement officials are in the final stages of negotiating a memorandum of understanding with Yemen over how to proceed with the Cole investigation. Boucher repeated earlier statements that Washington was pleased with Yemeni cooperation in the forensic stage of the probe but needed "more cooperation" in the future – specifically, access to suspects in Yemeni jails.

The Cole, a guided missile destroyer, was hobbled by a bomb blast Oct. 12 as it refueled in Aden's harbor. Seventeen U.S. sailors were killed and more than 30 were injured.
