U.S. Plane Was on Autopilot; Chinese Jets Acted Dangerously

Monday, 09 April 2001 12:00 AM

The news contradicts the claim of a Chinese pilot who said last week that the American EP-3 "suddenly swerved at a wide angle" and hit one of two Chinese fighters.

Pentagon officials said that it was possible the U.S. plane might have been banking to stay on course under automatic pilot but that at any rate it was up to "escort" jets to avoid the aircraft they were intercepting.

The Chinese fighter planes, in fact, were engaged in dangerous maneuvers and not "flying straight and level," the detained American crew told U.S. officials.
