U.S. Plane Fired On in Pakistan

Wednesday, 27 February 2002 12:00 AM

Police said the plane was taking off from the Shahbaz air base en route to the nearby Pishin air base when the gunmen fired at it with automatic rifles from a forest near the base. The pilot informed U.S. officials at the base who called the Pakistan army, which is responsible for external safety of U.S. bases in the country.

"By the time, a contingent of army and police arrived there, the gunmen had already fled," said a local police officer, Iqbal Ahmed Junejo. He said it was not yet clear whether the gunmen used automatic rifles or some anti-aircraft weapon.

Police detained eight suspects from nearby villages and sent more troops to the area to guard U.S. bases and police are conducting raids to catch the culprits, Junejo said.

U.S. forces have several bases in this province, which were used for air strikes against the Taliban fighters in neighboring Afghanistan.
