U.S. Jets Pound Terrorist Camp

The al-Qaeda camp is said to be almost 50 miles wide and encompassing hundreds, if not thousands of caves, far larger than the Pentagon knew when it first struck the training facility with cruise missiles in 1998, and then again in November.

For the first time in this conflict, two Air Force F-16s joined the battle, bombing buildings at the camp along with a Navy F/A-18 fighter. As the military prepares for the dangerous mission of transferring prisoners by plane to a new holding facility at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba, the number of detainees continues to rise. U.S. personnel now hold 368 detainees: 306 in Kandahar, 38 at Bagram air base near Kabul, 16 at Mazar-i-Sharif and eight aboard the USS Bataan in the Arabian Sea, according to U.S. Central Command.

The Marines, temporarily based in Kandahar, Afghanistan, are part of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit out of Camp LeJeune, N.C.

Their KC-130 refueling plane crashed into a mountain at 10:15 a.m. EST as it was preparing to land near Shamsi, Pakistan. It had taken off from Jacobabad.

The cause of the crash is unknown, according to U.S. Central Command.

Also Wednesday, an S-3 refueling plane made an emergency landing on the USS Theodore Roosevelt in the North Arabian Sea. Its landing gear collapsed when it hit the deck. No one was hurt in the incident, according to the Navy.
