U.S. Bureaucrats Lose Dozens of Terrorists

Wednesday, 18 June 2003 12:00 AM

Quoting a congressional report issued today, the Chicago Tribune said almost nothing was being done to locate or investigate the 30 because of missteps between and within the agencies charged with keeping terror suspects out of the country or tracking them down once here.

The draft of the report by the General Accounting Office, Congress' investigative arm, points to "systemic weaknesses" in the government's anti-terrorism efforts.

In all, 240 people had their visas revoked because of possible connections with terrorism between Sept. 11, 2001, and the end of last year. Many have entered and left the country, but at least 30 appear to remain, according to the GAO.

The State Department, the FBI and the Immigration and Naturalization Service are all cited in the report.
