U.N. Boots U.S. From Narcotics Board

It was the

U.S. Ambassador Herbert Okun was seeking a third term on the board. The same countries that that voted the United States off the human rights commission used the same secret ballot procedure to vote off the U.S. from the International Narcotics Control Board.

"That we find very regrettable. We intend to continue our engagement on the international narcotics issues. We'll continue our cooperation with and strong support for the U.N international drug control program as well as with the International Narcotics Control Board," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said during Monday's press briefing.

International Narcotics Control Board has 13 members and monitors compliance with U.N. drug rules on substance abuse and illegal drug trafficking.

Okun served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations between 1985-1989 and had been on the narcotics board where he served a term as vice president since 1997.
