Two Tragic Farces

Sunday, 19 November 2000 12:00 AM

While we see the so-called vote counting going on in Florida, we have also been treated to scenes of President Clinton outside Hanoi visiting a Vietnamese ‘crash site excavation’ where American and Vietnamese workers appear to be diligently sifting the mud for bone fragments of an American pilot shot down 33 years ago. This cruel joke, played out over the past decade (beginning under President George Bush’s administration, by the way), is a sop thrown to the POW families and America’s veterans as a way of saying, "We are doing

What a load!

Our government – beginning back in 1973 – has known that

Those of us who have fought inside this issue (I have been at it for 20 years!) have been attacked (by the Bushes, by the way, which is why I have not hidden my disdain for that team to get back into power), ridiculed, and even threatened with prosecution by John McCain. He is a total weasel and liar on the POW issue, which is why I opposed him so vehemently, too. We POW activists are/were torn when the GOP race became Bush vs. McCain – two camps devoted to keeping the cover-up in place.

Yet we have persevered because there are about 600 American men alive in Vietnam, Laos and maybe even Russia. And they want to come home – even to a country with a corrupt and lying government.

To see Clinton standing there watching this farce with the two sons of the pilot suspected of crashing in that field makes me almost cry. Why? Because the Vietnamese government

The living POW issue is a huge impediment to these relations – and one that both governments want to ignore. Neither Washington nor Hanoi could withstand the political explosion if it were revealed that Hanoi is holding live POWs against their will and that Washington knows it and has known it all along.

So the cover-up – and the fraudulent PR ‘search’ – continues.

The South Florida manual recount is another similar PR stunt aimed at making it look like an orderly process of ‘vote counting’ is going on. In reality, it is a Democrat-controlled process aimed at getting the votes they believe lousy ballots and antiquated machines cost them two weeks ago.

The GOP is squawking like a stuck pig because it

These two simultaneous scenes – the ‘searching’ for MIAs and the ‘counting’ of votes – are both examples of Kabuki Theater. Elaborate dances meant to

For our living POWs still wondering if they’ll ever come home and for our voters who are being ripped off, this is a dark time in American history.

We have a long way to go until we come back to the America that we all used to love.
