Two Security Officers Killed Near Hebron

Tuesday, 14 May 2002 12:00 AM

Palestinian Radio said that the Israeli troops entered the town to search for wanted Palestinian militants and became involved in a gun battle that left the two Palestinians dead.

Witnesses said that the head of the PA intelligence unit in Halhoul, Khaled Abu Kheiran, and his deputy, Abdul Aziz Zama’ra, were among those who were shot and killed. Reports indicated that it was not clear whether the Palestinians were armed or why the Israelis opened fire in the first place.

Sources at Hebron Hospital said that the bodies of the two Palestinian officers were brought to the hospital later Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Palestinians said that Israeli security forces arrested about 12 Palestinians during the night in the village of Deir El Ghousoon, near Tulkarem; the soldiers also arrested three other Palestinians in the village of Aaneen near Jenin when Israeli troops entered the village.

Palestinian witnesses said late Monday that Hassan Asfour, the Palestinian Authority minister for Non Governmental Organization Affairs, was beaten up by masked young men in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

Hassan Asfour, one of the architects of the 1993 Oslo agreement, suffered a deep cut to the head along with a broken leg and arm. Two of his bodyguards were also beaten and moderately injured, according to medical sources.

Asfour, who is one of the PA cabinet ministers, is part of the first ring of advisors around Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, and lately has been critical of the United States, Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

The Palestinian security forces immediately opened investigations into the attack on Asfour, who had left his office and was heading home when he was attacked by masked men who fled the scene after attacking the minister.

Palestinian security sources said that Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of the Fatah movement, claimed responsibility for attacking Asfour, however, the reason for the assault was not specified.

Arafat later visited Asfour in the hospital and promised him that those who attacked him would be arrested and would face charges.
