Two More Attorneys Join McVeigh Team

Richard Burr and Chris Tritico, both Houston lawyers who represented McVeigh during his Denver trial in 1997, will be joining Rob Nigh, of Tulsa, and Nathan Chambers, of Denver, on the McVeigh legal defense team.

"We believe that Mr. Burr and Mr. Tritico are uniquely qualified to assist with the work that must be performed on Mr. McVeigh's behalf," Nigh and Chambers said in a written statement.

Nigh and Chambers said McVeigh had made no decision yet on his legal options.

"His position has not changed," they said. "He is keeping his options open and will make an informed decision concerning the legal and factual information that we provide to him."

The McVeigh team is evaluating about 3,000 FBI investigative records that were never turned over to the defense lawyers during the discovery process of McVeigh's trial. The discovery of the records delayed McVeigh's execution from May 16 until June 11.

Attorney General John Ashcroft postponed the execution to give McVeigh's lawyers time to review the documents for a possible appeal, although FBI officials have said they don't believe they contain any information that would change the outcome of the trial.

McVeigh was sentenced to death after the Denver jury convicted him on federal conspiracy and murder charges in the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building that killed 168 people. Terry Nichols was sentenced to life for his role in the bombing plot.

Lawyers for Nichols have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to vacate a lower court order rejecting his latest appeal pending a study of the FBI documents. Nichols is also facing state murder charges in Oklahoma and his lawyers in that case also want to review the documents.
