Tortilla Tossing Called 'Culturally Insensitive'

According to a report in Thursday's Arizona Daily Star, UA President Peter Likins is urging students not to fling tortillas like Frisbees because it's a waste of food – and culturally insensitive to some people.

"When you think about it, it is an offensive notion that when people are hungry all over the world – and not so very far from our own campus – that enormous quantities of food are just thrown in the air, thrown away, so to speak. They become rubbish," the Arizona Daily Star quoted Likins as saying.

The newspaper reports that UA officials will urge students to check their tortillas at the door, where food bank boxes will be set up. Some students in the audience apparently get their kicks by tossing tortillas during the commencement speech at graduation ceremonies.

The newspaper reports that even Madeleine Albright had a few tortillas fly her way when she addressed UA's class of 1999. At the time, Abright was secretary of state. "It's a little unusual, but it does keep you alert," Albright later said.
