NY Times: Cheney Speech 'Disgraceful'

Thursday, 09 September 2004 12:00 AM

Cheney drew a sharp response from the Kerry campaign and other liberals on Tuesday, one day after he tied the outcome of the presidential election to the possibility of more terror attacks.

"It's absolutely essential that eight weeks from today, on Nov. 2, we make the right choice. Because if we make the wrong choice, then the danger is that we'll get hit again - that we'll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States and that we'll fall back into the pre-9/11 mindset, if you will - that in fact these terrorist attacks are just criminal acts and that we're not really at war."

The New York Times noted that even President Bush has said the U.S. may be hit again at any time.

Then came this editorial stinger: "The danger might be a bit less if the current administration had chosen to spend less on tax cuts for the wealthy and more on protecting our ports, securing nuclear materials in Russia and establishing an enforceable immigration policy that would keep better track of people who enter the country from abroad."

Also on Thursday, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd accused Cheney of "spitting toads" every time he opens his mouth.

She said Cheney - "the Terrifier in Chief" - was implying that John Kerry couldn't protect America from a terror attack - "blithely ignoring the fact that he and President Bush didn't protect us from the real 9/11."

For some Republicans, the question isn't whether Kerry could prevent an attack - it's how Kerry might respond to one, given his anti-war past and his vocal anti-war constituency.

Republicans have pointed to Kerry's shifting positions in the war on terror as evidence that even he doesn't seem to know where he stands on the issue.
