Time to Wake Up on Airport Security

Thursday, 30 September 2004 12:00 AM

It’s time to take the p-word off a list of expletives, and come to grips with the fact that it is our best line of attack against terrorists with hidden bombs. We need to profile terrorists. And we can start by reminding ourselves of what the 19 on 9/11 had in common: race, religion, gender, ethnicity, and appearance.

Unfortunately, those factors are not currently considered in the hunt for terrorists that take place every day at exactly the spot where they got us on 9/11 – our airports. To the contrary, in a scene from a demented form of the Emperor Has No Clothes, those responsible for airport security are instructed to treat all passengers similarly, when in fact, all passengers don’t pose a similar risk. So far, no one has been willing to confront the nakedness!

This isn’t rocket science.

Metal detectors and x-ray machines can pick up guns and knives, but not the presence of explosives. There are no machines in use to detect explosives on passengers. And while checked baggage is screened for explosives, most bags that are carried onto airplanes are not. Our vulnerability, therefore, comes in the form of passengers carrying explosives or carrying bags with explosives. It’s only when a passenger receives heightened screening that their carry-on bags are subject to “trace detection.” And so, the key question becomes, who shall we subject to secondary screening?

At present, and despite the fact that we are at war with radical Islam, young Arab males who have a multitude of commonalities with the 9/11 terrorists are on the same footing as 85-year–old women with aluminum walkers, and 8-year-old kids with Pokemon backpacks. That’s ridiculous. And no matter how the Transportation and Homeland bureaucrats spin it, the only purpose this policy serves is to make Mohammad feel as if he’s not being singled out because of his appearance, when in fact, he should be!

Offensive? Not when one comes to grips with the fact that we are not fighting a faceless, nameless enemy. We are under attack by members of radical sect of a known religion, and in many, but not all cases, they are distinguishable from middle America.

The lesson here is that we need to look for bombers, and not just for bombs. And those who don’t like it should blame a guy whose name is Bin Laden, not one named Bush.
