The Whole Clip

Tuesday, 28 November 2000 12:00 AM

The Gore team blew it by not moving in for the kill right then and there.

They should have run

Instead, they let Bush recover and come back.

As a hunting friend of mine opined, "When you’ve got a wounded animal down, you’ve got to empty the whole clip into him."

Gore didn’t – and Bush rose again.

Now it is Bush who has Gore down and virtually out. He needs to "empty the whole clip" while he can – and before some judge somewhere in Florida makes some ruling that re-invigorates the Gore candidacy.

What Bush should do is drop the U.S. Supreme Court case – pronto!

And he should start announcing Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice and Lawrence Lindsay to key administration slots right away. Get the whole transition running so fast and furious that it dominates the news and thereby diminishes and minimizes Gore.

The U.S. Supreme Court case isn’t going to prove anything – but it does afford Gore a 10- to 12-day window of opportunity for a surprise elsewhere. While everyone focuses on the "Big Court," it may be in a Florida court that something unexpected happens. Hasn’t that been the M.O. of this whole post-election story?

For example, keep your eyes on the Seminole County absentee ballot application case which has just been moved to Tallahasee. It is fraught with danger for the GOP and Bush forces. If it is a clear-cut legal issue, it could turn the election upside down.

But if Bush compresses the timetable by dumping the Supreme Court case and aggressively moves ahead as president-elect, perhaps he can subtly influence the absentee case judge to drop the whole matter.

In other words, the Bushies should empty "the whole clip" now, before Gore comes back to life yet again.
