To the Troops Protecting Our Nation: Thank You

Monday, 30 May 2005 12:00 AM

Wherever we go, everyone in need has a friend and champion. From peasant farmers to student dissidents and religious victims, American troops defend and protect those unable or unwilling to protect themselves.

Whenever our troops return home, everyone is happy they are back (with the annoying exception of our post-Vietnam tragedy).

Notwithstanding the petty partisan whining and carcinogenic divisiveness, we really ARE the good guys. We are the cowboys in the white hat. We are the comic book superheroes righting wrongs and protecting those unable to protect themselves.

It may be 'cool' to vilify our leaders, our policies, or the decisions of old white men moving chess pieces across a geopolitical board game. However, it is NOT cool to denigrate the routinely extraordinary actions of our young men and women in uniform.

I recently spoke with a former battalion commander who informed me there are National Guard and reserve units that have had three tours to ""the sandpit" in Iraq or Afghanistan. He told me of one soldier who is on his way to his fifth visit.

Once upon a Memorial Day, I wrote

I have written about Memorial Day more than once:

This is a time to remember … and hopefully to learn. There is a natural tendency for each generation to bemoan the contemporary generation and hyperbolize their predecessors. Much has been written about our fathers and grandfathers who served in WWII and "the greatest generation."

I don't mean to diminish the extraordinary acts, accomplishments and achievements of past generations – each has contributed and each has paid for our liberty and freedom (even when we didn't appreciate or deserve it). However, THIS generation – the young men and women who serve today in the very real war we fight – are remarkable.

Today's military is smarter, more fit, better equipped, and as committed as any generation from Valley Forge to Iwo Jima or Pleiku to Bosnia. We have an all-volunteer military that is dedicated to protecting YOU.

Wherever you go, you are little bit safer because of them. Wherever they are, EVERYONE has a friend, a defender and a champion.

Notwithstanding the revisionist spin of war critics claiming the military is a last resort for the undereducated and the underprivileged, many of today's volunteer military have traded high-paying jobs in cushy environments to serve. Today's volunteers haven't come from just urban ghettos and rural farms, but also from Wall Street, professional sports, academia and suburbia.

For Memorial Day it is right and proper to recognize those who have paid the ultimate price for our gifts. However, EVERY DAY we should offer a prayer in partial payment for the marvelous men and women who wear a uniform and serve US.

We are a blessed and gifted country. From the framers who wrote "with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor" to the troops who LIVE "Duty, Honor, Country" every day in the horrific heat of Iraq and the numbing mountain cold of Afghanistan so that you can drink your Starbucks and bitch about minutiae, we are blessed.

It is right and proper to honor our war dead. It is also important to acknowledge and thank those who serve in what may eventually be considered "the greatest generation."

Geoff is a ninth-generation commissioned officer in the U.S. Armed services, a former Green Beret, and a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel. Geoff hunts down the stories the rest of the media ignores and exposes them for public scrutiny. Metcalf fans know more than anyone about what's really going on in industry, business, government and the military.
