The Next Great Political Cause

Monday, 16 April 2001 12:00 AM

If ever there was an overdone TV news story, it is the tried and true scenes of last-minute filers lining up at the post office ready to post their income taxes to the IRS.

Then, in about a month, we will have another significant day: Tax Freedom Day – the day after which you begin earning money that you can keep. Prior to that day – from January 1 until May 3 – all income in effect goes to Washington for that year’s income tax.

Because we have all become inured to it, there is virtually no outrage anymore in this country over

While there are continual protests over the high level of taxation – and there should be – why no protests over

The answer? Because the left controls the so-called mainstream media – and they

Indeed, while the tax situation has received huge amounts of attention beginning in the late 1970s with the advent of Proposition 13 in California, followed by Reagan's Kemp-Roth tax cut, there is little focus on the need to

Combined federal, state and local government spending in the past 20 years has grown so rapidly that over 30 percent of GDP is government spending! And over 60 percent of our individual income is spent on some level of government spending!

But there is no real talk of cutting spending – only of "cutting the rate of increase in spending."

OK, I now ask you the

This is the key question, because if the level of education were rising, if our defense needs were being handled well and if federal social programs were doing the job, then we could at least say, "Well, I know we’re spending a lot, but it's worth it! The results are fantastic!"

But we cannot say that about

Educational spending? Primarily a local function, I know of few localities that are happy these days with the results. Test scores are not very good – and they aren't the be-all and end-all of how to measure students anyway. This nation has become so hung up on standardized test scores that we aren't looking at our youth through other prisms. For example, how about the poor way young Americans speak – and look – and how sloppy and fat so many of them are?

The proof is in the pudding: Despite constantly increasing public educational spending, more and more parents, aghast at what they are seeing, are yanking their kids out of public schools and either enrolling them in parochial or private school, or home schooling them. That says it all, doesn't it?

Our defense spending? $Two hundred seventy billion this year – and we are told we are undermanned, underpaid, ill trained and unfit to fight. Yet the Bush administration is

How could this military decline have been allowed to happen? Yes, I know, Clinton was anti-military. But we've had a GOP-controlled Congress since 1994! How did

Social spending? This area is fraught with useless government attempts to "equalize" society. Yet, I ask you, are we not a wreck of a society today? Violence, dehumanization, racial division and glorification of

Well, I could go on and on and on. But the point is simple: We are turning toward government more and more to solve our problems when we

The next big – and extremely difficult – political cause will be the attempt to reverse this trend and to actually

This fight will mean taking on the all-powerful leftist interest groups – and the media, too.

But if we fail to make this battle, we will eventually become full-time slaves to a huge and growing monolithic Giant Government.
