Thailand Seeks Journalist Blacklist

"This is a disgusting scenario I don't want to see in Thailand, where press freedom is prevalent," said one analyst.

Lt. Gen. Hemarat Thareethai, chief of immigration, on Friday said he intended to seek Interior Ministry approval to place FEER's Bangkok-based reporter Shawn W. Crispin and bureau chief Rodney Tasker on a special "watch list."

The list also includes the magazine's Hong Kong-based publisher Philip Ravzim and editor Michael Vatikiotis. It is not clear whether Interior Minister Purachai Piemsomboon supports the watch list.

In the Jan. 10 edition of FEER, Crispin, a U.S. citizen, wrote about businesses run by the family of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The Thaksin administration issued an order to ban the report and threatened a defamation lawsuit against the highly-regarded regional magazine. Thai Airway International, the national carrier, barred the issue from its flights.

"What I heard is that my work permit may not be renewed after it expires," Crispin said.

The Paris-based press freedom group Reporters Sans Frontieres issued a statement protesting the proposed blacklist. "We condemn this measure, which is prejudicial to press freedom and unworthy of a democracy," it said.
