Terrorist Sought Jihad School in Britain

Tuesday, 05 September 2006 12:00 AM

LONDON -- Abu Hamza al-Mazri, the former imam of Finsbury Park Mosque, bid to purchase the Jameah Islameah School, East Sussex, and use the 54-acre facility for jihad training. Abu Hamza approached the trustees of the school but they rejected his proposal.

The 14 suspects arrested over the weekend and now being questioned by police about alleged extremist activities, are all followers of Abu Hamza. It is believed that the group's ringleaders were trying to indoctrinate young British Muslims in order to build further terrorist training facilities in and around the United Kingdom and United States.

In 1993, the Jameah Islameah School was purchased by four men on behalf of the Jameatul-Uloum-al-Islameyah. A former aide of Abu Hamza, claims that during the 1990s, the cleric visited the school on at least five occasions, and sometimes he brought followers with him. Abu Hamza would then take the trainees into the woodland and begin the brainwashing and training.

Jameah Islameah School was registered as a charity with the Charity Commission in 1994, under the name Jameatul-Uloum-al-Islameyah. The commission announced yesterday that it was working closely with the police and Anti-Terrorist Unit and examining the activities of the school. "Any breach of the criminal law is primarily a matter for the law enforcement agencies . . . we will remain in close touch with those agencies while the police investigation continues."

Once Al-Masri's bid had been rejected by the school's trustees, he sent two aides to the United States to evaluate, purchase and run a ranch in Bly, Oregon. Proof of his involvement with the project, eventually led to him being charged in America with attempting to set up a terrorist camp.

Abu Hamza Al-Masri faces extradition to the United States on a series of terrorist charges following the completion of his appeal against his convictions in Britain for inciting murder and racial hatred.

The investigation continues . . .
