Tax Freedom Day 'Latest Date Ever'

Thursday, 03 May 2001 12:00 AM

"This year's Tax Freedom Day - May 3 - is the latest date ever," said Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, in a written statement.

"Unfortunately, Americans won't start working for themselves until the 5th of the month of the year, which means they work longer to pay their taxes than for their house payment, groceries and clothing combined. No wonder it is so difficult for many families to make ends meet."

Americans must work from Jan. 1 to May 3 before earning enough to pay their local, state and federal taxes, according to the Tax Foundation. May 3rd is the latest date ever.

Brady, who was named recently to the House Ways and Means Committee, said taxpayers faced a triple whammy: the highest tax burden in modern history, tax laws that are getting more and more complex, and a growing cost for complying with the complicated tax code. Copyright
