Taliban's Conditions for Bin Laden

Tuesday, 18 September 2001 12:00 AM

The conditions, set by Taliban chief Mullah Mohammad Omar, were conveyed to a Pakistani delegation in Kabul seeking bin Laden's expulsion, a Pakistan daily newspaper, The Nation, reported.

The other conditions include bin Laden's trial in a neutral country, stopping of military support to the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance and the resumption of international economic aid to Afghanistan, the report said.

Two of the six-member Pakistani delegation, which went to the southwestern Afghan city of Kandahar on Monday as an effort to avoid a U.S.-led military action against Afghanistan, returned have returned to Islamabad for consultation, the report said.

Meanwhile, the Pakistani team, led by chief of its military intelligence, Gen. Mahmood Ahmad, was in Kabul where it resumed talks with the Taliban official Tuesday. The delegation was expected to return to Islamabad late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Taliban officials have denied a report as "false and concocted" that they had declared a jihad – holy war – against the United States.

Deputy chairman of the Taliban council of ministers, Mullah Mohammad Akhond, said they had not declared a jihad yet, "but it becomes binding on all Muslims as soon as an Islamic country is attacked."
