Supreme Court Retirement Unlikely

Sunday, 29 June 2003 12:00 AM

The White House had discussed lists of possible replacements, and groups on the right and the left had prepared their position papers.

In addition, for several days this month, leading Senate Democrats sparred with the White House over whether they should be consulted in advance by President Bush on any possible Supreme Court nominees, The New York Times reported.

But as the court finished its business for the term this week and no retirement was announced, most began moving into demobilization mode, The Times said.

While there was no formal announcement that there would not be a retirement, court watchers generally said they believed that if any of the justices intended to retire, it would have happened already.
