Suicide Attack Kills Two, Wounds Dozens In Israel

Friday, 25 May 2001 12:00 AM

Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack through a phone call to the Hizballah television station in Lebanon.

The bomb blast came just hours after another suicide bomber attempted to drive a truck full of explosives into an Israeli army outpost in the Gaza Strip. Israeli soldiers fired at the truck when it refused to heed calls and warning shots to stop, the army said. The vehicle exploded but injured no soldiers.

Mujahed Hussein Abu Nasser, a Palestinian in his 20s, was identified as the bomber. In a videotaped message left behind he said he had wanted "to avenge the killing of our martyrs by the criminal [Prime Minister Ariel] Sharon." The bombings come against the backdrop of a unilateral ceasefire call from Sharon earlier in the week.
