Study: Videos Show Autistic Regression in Children

Wednesday, 03 August 2005 12:00 AM

Other children who appeared normal in their first-year video had begun displaying symptoms of autism by the time their second-year birthday party was videotaped.

Researchers say it's the first objective evidence of autistic regression, a form of autism that accounts for about 25 percent of all autism cases in the U.S., according to Fox News.

The study, which appears in the August issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry, did not probe the cause of autistic regression, or any possible link to childhood vaccines.

Researchers say that by the age of 3 or 4, there was no difference in the severity of autism between those with autistic regression and the other children with early-onset autism.

Geraldine Dawson, PhD, director of the Autism Center, said the new study suggests that "we need to screen at 18, 24 and 36 months to find children who develop normally at first, but then experience a regression."

"Once again, this study provides an important lesson that parents are good reporters on what is happening with their children. It underscores the importance of professionals to listen to parents," she added.
