Study: Cutting Down on Smoking Not Enough

Friday, 23 September 2005 12:00 AM

Even light smoking can be very harmful to your health, according to a new study which is sure to dampen the spirits of smokers who have cut down but not quit. Done in Norway, the 30-year study monitored the health and smoking habits of 43,000 people – and the results were surprising.

People who smoked just one to four cigarrettes a day had three times the risk of developing heart disease compared to non-smokers. Heavier smokers had even greater risk – but the risk jumped highest between non-smokers and light smokers. In addition, light smoking men were nearly three times as likely to die of cancer and light smoking women were nearly 5 times as likely.

The study "reiterates the important message that there is no such thing as a safe level of smoking," says Thomas Glynn of the American Cancer Society.
