Soros' Super-Secret Fundraiser

Monday, 26 September 2005 12:00 AM

Left-wing billionaire George Soros is once again raising money for the Democrats – he hosted a super-secret fund-raiser at his New York home that netted $250,000 for Sen. Charles Schumer's Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

The gathering of about 60 friends and acquaintances marked Soros' first foray back into politics since he spent $25 million last year in an effort to defeat President Bush.

Republicans were quick to react when they learned of the Soros fund-raiser, according to the publication The Hill. "I think it is shocking that Democrats would treat him as a mainstream force of Democratic politics," said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.). "He has an agenda that transcends American interests."

Soros is often associated with hot-button issues that most politicians would avoid, such as decriminalization of drugs, assisted suicide and voting rights for felons, The Hill reports. For example, he has helped fund initiatives that would lighten criminal penalties for drug use.

Said Tracy Schmitt, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee: "Mainstream Democrats would probably be disturbed to learn that their party leaders are taking their cues from a man who wants to make heroin a prescription drug."

As NewsMax reported last year, Soros believed that defeating Bush was "a matter of life and death."

Among other contributions, he committed around $5 million to MoveOn.org, a left-wing group that sponsored an ad contest in which two ads compared Bush to Adolf Hitler.
