Snack Study: Sunflower Seeds, Pistachios Healthiest

Thursday, 08 December 2005 12:00 AM

Of all the seeds and nuts Americans love to eat as snacks, sunflower seeds and pistachios are the best for lowering cholesterol and boosting heart health, according to a study from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

Chemists Katherine Phillips and David Ruggio did an analysis of 27 of the most commonly eaten nuts and seeds and found that pistachios and sunflower kernels had the highest levels of heart-healthy nutrients called phytosterols.

Sesame seed and wheat germ actually ranked higher, but are not consumed as frequently as individual foods.

Brazil nuts and walnuts ranked the lowest in phytosterols, the researchers reported in the study published in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

The researchers cautioned that phytosterols are not the only food component involved in lowering cholesterol and that other compounds may also play a role.
