Thursday, 16 November 2000 12:00 AM

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer:

UAL Flight 809, a Boeing 747-400, was en route Wednesday afternoon from San Francisco to Osaka when smoke was detected coming from a galley in the passenger cabin.

The pilot swung back toward the mainland, putting the big jetliner down without incident at 3:10 p.m. on a runway of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, adjacent to the main Boeing manufacturing plant.

As emergency vehicles stood ready, the 747 taxied off the runway to the airport terminal, where all 227 passengers and crew alighted uninjured.

Some passengers said they had not even noticed the odor of smoke.

Its cause was not known immediately.
