Sixth-Grader Strangled After Internet Date

The girl, Christina Long, was described by her school principal as being a good student and a sweet girl.

But police say she had up to a dozen screen names that were sexually suggestive. Under one of those names, she met Saul dos Reis Jr., whose screen name was "Hot es300," apparently a reference to his Lexus.

Dos Reis, 25, told authorities that he had sex with Long on Friday night, and he also revealed where they could find her body. He was taken into custody and is accused under federal law of using his computer to lure a minor for the purpose of a sexual act, according to the Hartford Courant's Tuesday edition.

Long's body was located early Monday in a creek in Greenwich.

Her case spurred authorities to remind parents that they need to monitor their children's activities on the Internet.

"No parents would invite strangers into their homes to meet their children, and they shouldn't let them meet strangers on their computers," U.S. Attorney John A. Danaher III told the Courant.

Danbury Police Chief Robert Paquette told the Courant: "You never know who is on the other end of that mouse you have your hand on."

Authorities charged dos Reis after going through the e-mail on the computer Long used. The girl had lived with her aunt, who was her guardian, and who was the owner of the computer.

FBI agents seized dos Reis' computer on Sunday and were checking whether he had been in contact with other children.

The aunt "blames herself and [had thought] that she was doing the right thing" in raising Long, said a priest who had accompanied the FBI agents who notified the aunt of the girl's slaying.

"She was aware of her activities as far as she knew," the Rev. Albert Audette told the Courant. "We are involved with so many evils around us. We have to watch our children so carefully."
