Simple Fix For Prostate Biopsy Pain

Monday, 05 December 2005 12:00 AM

Here's good news for the many thousands who must undergo transrectal prostate biopsies this year - a simple, safe, and inexpensive lidocaine suppository can substantially reduce the pain, a new study shows.

The potentially life-saving procedure involves the removal of core samples from the prostate and can be quite painful, even when standard lidocaine gel is used to numb the prostate.

But Austrian researchers report that lidocaine suppositories relieve pain far more effective than the gel, especially if they are given about two hours before the operation.

Dr. Klaus G. Fink and colleagues, from Paracelsus Private Medical University in Salzburg, studied 100 men undergoing prostate biopsies and found that those given lidocaine suppositories two hours beforehand reported 71 percent less pain.

And the suppositories even cost 25 percent less per patient than the gel.

"As suppositories are easy to handle and cheap, they are recommended for routine prostate biopsy," the researchers conclude.

The Austrian study was published in the urology journal, BJU International.
