Senate Showdown on Tax Bill Is Today

Monday, 21 May 2001 12:00 AM

Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press,'' Lott predicted Sunday the compromise bill would pass - "overwhelmingly." Lott said the Senate tax-cut bill - although less than what President Bush wanted - will help the economy and families with children.

Lott said he has the support of 10 Senate Democrats, and he predicted that even more may rally behind the measure when it comes up for a vote. Before that happens, the Senate is expected to debate a "trigger" amendment that would tie any future tax cuts to debt reduction. The amendment would trigger a delay in scheduled tax cuts and new spending programs if debt-reduction targets are not met.

The tax-relief bill passed by the House is more in line with what President Bush wanted, and the president's supporters hope the final bill will tilt more his way when it finally emerges from a conference committee.
