Senate GOP Challenging Lott's Authority

Thursday, 24 May 2001 12:00 AM

Lott's leadership has been criticized by conservatives in the evenly divided Senate, but Thursday's announcement by liberal Jim Jeffords, R-Vt., that he would leave the GOP and give control of the Senate to Democrats could be the last straw, say party insiders.

Lott, who was more than 40 minutes late for a news conference Thursday morning because a party meeting on the situation ran late, may survive, say party officials, because the opposition is split as to who should replace him. Party insiders said that conservatives champion Assistant Majority Leader Don Nickles of Oklahoma, while other candidates include Nebraska's Chuck Hagel, Tennessee's Bill Frist and Texas' Kay Bailey Hutchison.
