Schwarzenegger Supports State of Emergency Moves

"So the concerns are just very broad, and on both sides, on the Mexican side and on the American side."

Speaking to San Diego talk radio host Rick Roberts, Schwarzenegger said he had no immediate plans to declare a state of emergency for border counties in California, but said he would consider doing so "if there is a need."

Schwarzenegger earlier created a controversy by declaring that California should close its borders. He later amended "close" to "secure."

He also irked Hispanics by praising the Minutemen volunteer border watchers, and supporting an effort to repeat a law allowing illegal aliens to get driver's licenses.

Schwarzenegger singled out the move by Gov. Richardson, a Mexican-American, "because so many times when you make a move like that you're considered immediately a racist."

Richardson stated that he declared a state of emergency "because of the urgency of the situation and, unfortunately, because of the total inaction and lack of resources from the federal government and Congress."

Both Richardson and Napolitano believe the federal government has failed to do its part to stop drug smugglers, violence, illegal immigration and even disease from crossing the Mexican border and entering their states.

As for the possibility that Schwarzenegger could declare a state of emergency in California as well, his press secretary Margita Thompson said "currently there are no set of circumstances" that require such a move.
