Salami Technique Takes Freedoms Away

Sunday, 24 February 2002 12:00 AM

We Americans have been losing our freedoms to big government for years.

The new war on terrorism has yielded even bigger dividends for government power at the expense of our liberties.

For years, our right to privacy – based on the notion that our private property is constitutionally protected from government invasion – has been eroded as Congress, federal bureaucrats and special interests have used the salami technique on us.

One slice at a time, little by little, we have been losing our freedoms.

Earlier this year, NewsMax blew the whistle on the most egregious, latest slices cut from the salami of our freedoms.

For example, new medical "privacy” rules now give government unprecedented access to our personal, confidential medical records.

The rules promulgated by Bill Clinton in December 2000, and accepted by the Bush administration, will require all of our medical records to be digitized.

This means our records will be computer accessible by government officials and others.

These so-called privacy rules impose stiff fines on any health care provider or government official who releases your private records without our consent.

But that supposed safeguard is a joke.

By requiring our records to be digitized and computerized, the government is opening the door to massive abuses.

We all know how often sensitive government information is illegally leaked by government officials to the press.

For the first time, under these "privacy” rules, government officials will have access to our personal medical records, our psychiatric records, embarrassing ailments and worse.

Perhaps even more shocking, the Clinton privacy rules also allow health care providers to sell our medical records to marketing firms without our consent.

This unbelievable fact is right there in the rules.

As one privacy rights advocate warned, you may soon be getting a call from a pharmaceutical company marketing firm. The telemarketer could say, "Mr. Jones, we understand you have hemorrhoids. We want to let you know about a better, improved medicine than Preparation H.”

These dangerous rules are not so disturbing as the silence of the press.

Save for NewsMax, which broke the story, a report in Forbes confirming these concerns, and the steadfast opposition of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), there has been a dangerous silence from the liberal American media, Congress and even the public.

Obviously, major special interests like pharmaceutical marketing firms and big-government elitists want these rules to be fully implemented.

This demonstrates how significant freedoms, including keeping our medical records private, are being taken from us.

Here's another privacy right that has been taken from you.

Late in 2000, President Clinton signed into law new, sweeping legislation allowing any finance company or bank you do business with to sell your confidential financial data, including your Social Security number, to marketing firms.

As a result of this law, you have probably seen an upswing in telemarketing calls to your home offering you financial products, as well as more junk mail offers.

It is no small irony that as government takes away our freedoms, it claims it is protecting our "privacy."

This reminds me of Huey Long's famous comment. Asked if he thought America would have fascism, he said, "Yes, but we’ll call it anti-fascism."
