Russia to Support New Term for Annan

Wednesday, 16 May 2001 12:00 AM

"Russia highly values the personal contribution of Secretary-General Annan toward strengthening the role of the United Nations and its authority in international affairs," Ivanov said after talks with Annan.

"Russia will be prepared to support the candidacy of Annan for a second term."

With support from Russia, a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, the 63-year-old Annan's chances of being reappointed secretary-general have substantially increased.

The United States, France and China have already expressed support for Annan's candidacy, while the United Kingdom is expected to do so soon.
