Report: N. Korea Wants Nuke Talks With U.S.

Sunday, 03 November 2002 12:00 AM

The New York Times reported that North Korea, which last month disclosed its secret nuclear program, also said it would consider international inspections of the uranium facilities.

The newspaper, citing written statements released by the North's mission to the United Nations and an interview with a senior North Korean diplomat, said the contacts were initiated by North Korea's U.N. mission.

Last month, North Korea acknowledged that its uranium facilities were part of a secret program to build nuclear weapons, in violation of a 1994 energy aid agreement with the United States.

"Everything will be negotiable," read one of the statements issued through North Korea's U.N Ambassador Han Song Ryol. "Our government will resolve all U.S. security concerns through the talks, if you government has a will to end its hostile policy.

The State Department had no official response to the latest statements, according to the Times.

Han told the Times his government had been "stunned" by the refusal of the United states to continue talks on the nuclear issue and "the interpretation is that the U.S. is preparing for a war."

"There must be a continuing dialogue," he said. "If both sides sit together, the matter can be resolved peacefully and quickly."
