Rep. Barr Says Congress Will Beat Back Anti-gun Bills

Saturday, 19 May 2001 12:00 AM

That vow was issued today by Rep. Bob Barr, R-Ga., before thousands of cheering members of the National Rifle Association.

The congressman took to the podium at the Convention Center at the NRA’s annual convention just after the organization had heard a stirring challenge from NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre to fight the twin assaults in Congress against the First Amendment (the McCain-Feingold bill on campaign finance "reform") and against the Second Amendment (the McCain-Lieberman bill to require stricter background checks at gun shows).

"I do stand here and take up your challenge,” the Georgia lawmaker told LaPierre, as the crowd roared its approval.

"We will not rest on our laurels,” he added. "We stand with you shoulder to shoulder and toe to toe. I hear your challenge. I accept your challenge. These assaults on the Constitution cannot go unanswered.”

Later, Barr told NewsMax.com that "this is not just an attack on the First Amendment and not just an attack on the Second Amendment. They’re taking them both on.”

"It’s unfortunate," he added, "and very strange coming from somebody [Sen. John McCain] who’s been in the military, who’s defended the Bill of Rights. ... I just don’t understand it.”

The congressman, perhaps best known as the first lawmaker to call for former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment, would not speculate on McCain’s future in the Republican Party. "I’m just concerned about the substance of what he’s doing because it’s very bad.”

As for speculation that McCain might be planning to switch and become a Democrat, Barr said he did not see that happening. "He gets more publicity as a maverick Republican. That’s what seems to motivate him more than anything else.”

In looking out over the crowd at an exhibition hall at the convention, Barr agreed that these are "the people who elected Bush.”

"They [Democrats] forget the Heartland. They concentrate on La-La Land on the West Coast and Big Apple on the East Coast … and I’m glad they do forget about it because that’s what we win.”
