Reno: 'We're Here to Do What's Right'

But for now, Reno said, the state government should handle the complaints.

At her weekly news briefing, Reno said: "We're not here to generate controversy. We're here to do what's right: to make sure the voice of the American people that has spoken has been heard fairly.

"We received a letter yesterday from the NAACP. We will review that. But I want to be very careful that we don't do anything that politicizes what has been a very important time in American history."

Reno said there were no Justice Department attorneys in Florida right now. She also said she has not discussed the Florida matter with the Clinton White House.

Neither the Gore nor the Bush campaign has contacted the Justice Department about the vote in Florida.

"In the system we have, state law governs the conduct of an election in the form of a ballot. I think it is important that we adhere to principles of federalism and recognize that it is primarily a state issue, and again, do everything we can to play an appropriate role that doesn't politicize the matter," Reno said.

It's important to recognize that the states, not the federal government, are responsible for their own elections and ballot layout, Reno said.

In addition to the complaint from the NAACP, Reno said, the Justice Department had received a number of calls from disgruntled Palm Beach County voters.

"I want to be very careful that we don't do anything that politicizes what is a very important moment in American history, when we should all be working together to see that the voice of the American people is heard," she said.
