Radiowaves Can Help Curb Liver Cancer

Radiofrequency ablation -- using radiowaves to destroy the cancers -- performed as well as surgery in three-year survival study of patients with a small hepatocellular carcinoma, according to Italian researchers.

And the minimally invasive treatment allowed patients to return to their daily lives within days rather than weeks, said the investigators. Furthermore, the ablation procedure costs one tenth the amount of the standard surgical treatment.

Dr. Riccardo Lencioni and his colleagues at thee University of Pisa compared results of surgery and RF ablation on selected patients who all started out with good liver function, small cancers and no spread of their cancers.

They found that overall survival in the surgery arm was 65.1%, compared with 71.8% for the RF ablation patients. Local tumor progression at three years was zero in the surgery arm, compared with 19.3% in the RF ablation arm. New hepatocellular carcinomas occurred in 58.5% of surgery patients, compared 55.2% of RFA patients.

"We were very impressed to see that ablation patients achieved the same (survival) result as surgery patients," Dr. Lencioni said.

Experts say the findings indicate that RF ablation may soon replace surgery as the first-line treatment of selected liver cancers. The study appears in the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.
