Pro-Family Group Calls 'West Wing' Producer 'Low Character'

Tuesday, 04 September 2001 12:00 AM

Andrea Sheldon Lafferty, Executive Director of the Traditional Values Coalition (TVC), commented on the NewsMax.com and New York Times reports that the network series is planning on breaking "a longstanding network taboo” by having a character "curse in a way that uses the Lord’s name in vain.”

The Times did not make it clear whether that person would be the lead character of the show, the President of the United States played by Martin Sheen.

Lafferty said the producer is "pushing his low character on the American people.”

Lafferty said taking the Lord’s name in vain "is highly offensive to millions of Americans.” The suggestion of the Times's report is that the language employed will be serious blasphemy.

The Times, in its Sunday edition, also reported that CBS, NBC, and ABC are planning a full-scale attack on traditional values in their programming during the coming 2001-2002 prime time season.

The TVC leader wondered aloud "what would happen if somebody, you know, went on national television and said the Holocaust never happened?”

"You don’t see that,” Lafferty said, but it’s okay to attack decency "left and right.”

Nor does TVC buy the argument that the networks are forced by competitive pressures to lower their standards. Supposedly, this is because they are losing out to Cable TV which has already broken those decency barriers (i.e. "The Sopranos” which uses graphic scenes and expletives.)

Lafferty notes that "you pay extra for HBO” and that "a lot of families” are not doing that,” so as to keep that influence away from the kids.

Television seems to be a race to the bottom, as Traditional Values Coalition sees it.

If one is talking about competition, the competitive value seems to be "who can be the most sensational, who can be the most disgusting, and come up with the latest bizarre, weird idea. That is what television has become.”
