Powell Must Go

Friday, 27 April 2001 12:00 AM

With these 16 words Colin Powell has proven –

He should resign – immediately.

And if he refuses to do so, G.W. Bush should fire him.

Powell's first 100 days have been shockingly incompetent:

Right out of the box he equated Israeli behavior with the Palestinians' violence. Then he advocated lifting most of the sanctions on Iraq. And then, while still on his first overseas trip, he usurps the president and secretary of defense by unilaterally announcing that the U.S. has no objection to an 'all-European' defense force – while never even discussing it with Defense Secretary Rumsfeld!

Then, upon returning home, he again announces 'his' policy on talks with Communist North Korea until a peeved G.W. Bush orders him out of the Oval Office to announce that there would

During the recently completed 'deal' to bring home our EP-3E 24-person crew, it was Powell who immediately wanted to play the apology game. Apparently he and his underlings at State have no problem with the United States readily apologizing for something Red China did!

Nor does he seem intent on punishing Beijing for its barbaric behavior.

And now we have the height of diplomatic – and

"He’s done some good things for his people" is one of the catch phrases that are often used to disarm critics. (It's like saying "Mussolini made the trains run on time.") But the effect is to praise an evil, corrupt and murderous regime that

Creating a police state where family members spy on each other?

Terrorizing the Cuban people with the threat of prison for disagreeing with Havana's policies?

Exporting the Cuban 'revolution' and hundreds of thousands of Cuban combat troops to Africa and Central America?

Carrying out the systematic and brutal punishment of gays and HIV sufferers?

Accomplishing the deliberate destruction of the Jewish community in Havana?

Having what Colin Powell's

No, Colin Powell, in a pathetic attempt to assuage one of Congress' most pro-Castro leftists and apologists, New York congressman Jose Serrano, showed that he has either no knowledge of the Castro regime or no control over his own tongue.

While it is likely that Powell will issue some clarification soon to tamp down the devastating effects of his statements, the damage is done.

Politically, this hurts the Bushes – terribly!

Florida Governor Jeb Bush is already in the fight of his life next year for re-election. The Cuban-American community in the Miami area has long been a bastion of conservative Republicanism. But now, after Powell’s statements? Can you imagine the despair today down there in 'little Havana'? When they voted overwhelmingly for W Bush over Al Gore, they may have swung the

For that alone – and for stupidly endangering Jeb Bush’s re-election chances – Powell must go.

Please, Colin, take a hike. Go back to your corporate boards and your cushy speaking dates.

But please, get out of the State Department before you tell us that Saddam is a great guy and a compassionate humanitarian or that North Korea’s Kim Jong-il is "someone we can work with" because he loves Scotch and imported Scandinavian prostitutes!

No, Powell must go. He is an embarrassment to the nation, to the Bush administration – and even to himself.
