Powell Is No Loyalist

Trying to look presidential, Bush is building an administration. He has placed Dick Cheney in charge and the very first appointment they want to announce is the retired general as the new secretary of state. Cheney, Powell and their wives fly to the Bush ranch in Texas today to create a photo-op that makes W look presidential.

It is said that Powell has happily accepted this assignment – with one caveat. He does

A real self-promoter and front-runner.

Remember last August at the GOP Convention in Philadelphia? Powell – a real media darling – spoke to the convention and, just like his convention speech four years earlier,

Somehow he feels the right to attack the political party that promoted him over more qualified and talented generals. He even had the nerve to attack Ronald Reagan in a print interview after Dutch had named him national security advisor!

Then, the morning after his Philadelphia speech, he gave two network media interviews where he carefully made it clear he would serve in a Gore administration. This only hours after speaking at Bush’s nominating convention!

And here we now are in the midst of one of the strangest political spectacles in our history. Bush/Cheney have asked Powell to serve in the single most prestigious Cabinet post: secretary of state. And what does he do and say? Does he reciprocate with an affirmative answer – and thereby help Bush in this strange time?

He wants the job, but he wants Bush to

Guess Powell does not want to run the risk that his prized resume will have this listing on it: secretary of state

Powell should have been taught that loyalty is a two-way street.

The Bushes – both father and son – have religiously promoted Powell. (Yes, they did this for their own political purposes.) They used him in the key battleground states when the race drew close.

But it was the Bushes – not Clinton or Gore – who courted him and boosted him.
