Playing with Fire

Said Williams' attorney, Terry Thompson, "It's a fact of American history that our founders were religious men, and to hide this fact from young fifth-graders in the name of political correctness is outrageous and shameful.

"Williams wants to teach his students the true history of our country," he added. "There is nothing in the Establishment Clause [of the U.S. Constitution] that prohibits a teacher from showing students the Declaration of Independence."

Well it may not be mentioned in the Establishment Clause but the idea of allowing any mention of God in the presence of young students evokes panic in the minds of our secularist education establishment.

It seems to be loaded with the sort of idiots who cringe at the thought that there might be a supreme being higher than themselves, or that the very mention of that supreme being in the company of young students is an outrage that must be prevented at all costs.

In their intellectual egotism they echo Søren Kierkegaard's personal declaration of independence: that the thought of the existence of a Deity put a limit on his intelligence. Poor Søren, humbled by a higher being than himself.

This absurdity which in more sober times would be a cause of great mirth is nothing more than a symptom of what ails this nation - a pandemic of militant atheism parading under the banner of civil liberty carried aloft by such enemies of religious freedom as the American Civil Liberties Union (A.C.L.U.) and kindred organizations.

Their real target is Christianity which they recognize as a bulwark against their secularist agenda and their determination to drive God out of the public square.

And they have good reason to recoil at the very mention of such documents as the Declaration of Independence which proclaims fealty to the "Laws of Nature and of Nature's God," and concludes with the ringing declaration of the Founding Fathers' "firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence."

If you read the statements of the Founding Fathers such as George Washington's that "To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest Glory to add the more distinguished Character of Christian," or Patrick Henry's proclamation that "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists [pluralism], but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ!" it becomes abundantly clear that the nation to which under Divine guidance they gave birth was, and was meant ever to be, a Christian nation that out of respect for the principles of Christianity respected and welcomed all religious creeds, Christian or otherwise.

And that's what the A.C.L.U. wants obliterated from the national memory. In its place they want to establish an officially atheistic or agnostic regime that proclaims that mankind is on its own and doesn't need interference from any alleged supreme being.

There is nothing new about this. In recent centuries atheists have been motivated by the idea that driving religion out of the public square would usher in an era of peace, moral righteousness and equality, as John Omicinsky put it in a Crisis magazine review of Alister McGrath's "The Twilight of Atheism."

He quotes McGrath's conclusion of where this all led: "The reality of the situation is bloody, messy and brutal. The eradication of faith tends to involve firing squads and gas chambers."

McGrath goes on to write that "The greatest intolerance and violence [in the 20th century] were practiced by those who believed that religion caused intolerance and violence."

The midwife at the births of Nazi Germany, Red China and the Soviet Union was atheism. And this is where the zealots at the A.C.L.U. would ultimately lead us - to a godless paradise presided over by the legal arm of their organization and a host of incipient Hitlers and Stalins and their executioner goon squads.

All across the nation we are being besieged by hordes of malcontents using our out-of-control courts to enforce limitations upon our freedom to proclaim and practice our religious and political freedoms.

In the last election we saw the reaction of a huge number of Americans to what they recognize is a tyranny of a minority determined to trample on the rights of the majority.

This is provoking a simmering anger among the "red state" majority, many of whom live in "blue" states. The A.C.L.U., the media and the academic elite, militant atheists and others of their sorry ilk need to recognize that more and more Americans have had it and are not going to take it much longer.

They had better understand that they are playing with fire as they continue to mount their assaults against the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God, and the God-given rights of their fellow Americans.

In the end, it won't be God who will be driven from the public square, but they themselves.
