Playing Us for Suckers

The goal of this war – as clearly enunciated by the president and endorsed by virtually every American except the still-unrepentant American-haters on our college campuses and in the "mainstream media" – was to wipe out the terrorists and the governments that harbor them.

And here at home the goal was to strengthen "homeland security" – a terrible phrase because it sounds eerily like Hitler's calls for the triumph of the "Fatherland." (What was wrong with plain old "domestic security"?)

So, how are we doing?

1) We have removed the evil Taliban government from ruling power in Kabul. We have

The Taliban consists mostly of Pashtun tribesmen; so, too, does the majority of the new ruling party inside Kabul's recently installed government. Recent reports indicate that many former Taliban soldiers and officials are allowed to just assimilate back into Afghan society – with

Frankly, the new Hamid Karzai Afghan government seems half-hearted in its attempt to capture Omar. The Afghans seem interested –

2) Al-Qaeda has been disrupted since we began bombing on Oct. 7. Also, its finances have been hindered by increased international cooperation.

But money is not the key operational or motivational asset of this organization.

Sept. 11 cost only a few hundred thousand dollars in living expenses, airfares and flight training for the 19 murderers to kill more than 3,000 people. By using our planes against us, this clever plan worked because of its

If al-Qaeda and Iraq are behind the anthrax letters, that, too, is an inexpensive operation. Stuffing a few envelopes with this lethal powder and mailing it can't cost more than a few dollars. Yet look at the disruption this action caused. The U.S. Senate office buildings are still not fully operational three months after the first letter. What if the anthrax were smallpox, ebola or some other manufactured agent?

The failed attempt two weeks ago by Richard Reid to blow up – with his sneaker bomb – an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami shows how clever, resourceful and still dangerous al-Qaeda is.

Where was the sky marshal on this flight, by the way?

Why did it take a basketball player and a flight attendant to subdue this man?

What kind of post-9/11 security is this?

3) Osama bin Laden has disappeared – probably in the backyard of our so-called ally Pakistan. The Pakistanis, too, have figured out how to play Washington. Since 9/11, Islamabad has begged for – and received – billions of dollars in aid, not to mention forgiveness in billions more in debts and a lifting of sanctions. Pakistan's corrupt and two-faced spy agency – the Inter-Services Agency – was the original sponsor and supporter of the Taliban. CIA Director George Tenet recently journeyed to ISI to ask its help. God knows how many more billions in "black" funds were handed over. And guess what?

4) The Saudis are the secret enemy in this entire sordid tale. They, too, play us for suckers. They have cut oil production – oil we protected in 1991 from Iraq! – and thus hope to raise the price of crude oil.

Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were Saudi; Osama, of course, is a Saudi.

Wiretaps and other intelligence now show that all along the Saudi royal family – supposedly friendly to Washington – has for years been secretly supporting terrorist groups. And our own government has known it all along – and done nothing about it!!!

Conclusion: We Americans are being played for suckers by these devious, double-dealing Mideast merchants. Our tremendous military and economic strength is no match for a people who have survived for centuries under dozens of regimes.

If we intend to win this war – and we must – we have to get serious. No longer can we trust anyone in that region. We are going to have to be

Otherwise we will wake up one day and realize that nothing has changed at all!
