Peres, Arafat Agree to Resume Cooperation

Wednesday, 26 September 2001 12:00 AM

In a brief statement read out by Palestinian Local Governance Minister Saeb Erakat, the officials said Arafat and Peres reiterated their commitment to recommendations made in the Mitchell commission report and also to an understanding reached under the guidance of CIA Director George Tenet.

The Mitchell recommendations provide for a series of steps beginning with a cessation of hostilities and gradually leading to a resumption of peace talks. The Tenet Understandings provide for the cease-fire that should pave the way for implementing the Mitchell report. According to Wednesday's statement, a committee of senior representatives, both Palestinians and Israelis, will be formed to deal with issues arising from implementations of the Mitchell and Tenet suggestions.

"The two sides will resume full security cooperation and exert maximum effort to sustain the declared cease-fire," the statement continued. Along those lines, the Israeli government will lift closures and pull back forces, the statement said.

Peres and Arafat also agreed to meet again "in a week or so."

Asked whether the meeting went well, an aide to Peres told United Press International: "It was over. Whether it was good or bad we'll see in the field."

The United States has been pressing for the resumption of negotiations, believing that calming Israeli-Palestinian violence is essential to gaining Arab and Muslim support for its international coalition against terrorism.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had insisted that talks take place only after two days of total calm. But just hours before the meeting, three Israeli soldiers were injured when a bomb exploded in a tunnel dug, allegedly by Palestinians, beneath an army position between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.
