Pentagon Muted on China's Latest Plane Insult

A team of five engineers from Lockheed Martin returned last weekend from three days in China examining the aircraft. Rumsfeld said he has given that information to Secretary of State Colin Powell.

That team determined it would be possible to fix the EP-3, which was severely damaged when it was hit April 1 by a Chinese fighter jet. The Chinese plane was apparently sheared in half and crashed into the South China Sea. The U.S. aircraft - its nose cone ripped off, a propeller broken and two engines down - struggled to make an emergency landing on Hainan Island, where the crew of 24 was held hostage by the Chinese military for 11 days.

"Powell … and the diplomatic channels will now go back and discuss that with the People's Republic of China, I presume through the foreign ministry. And it is in that channel at the present time," Rumsfeld said Tuesday at a Pentagon press conference.

Pentagon officials said they were not concerned how the plane gets home, just that it is returned to the United States.

"Anything can be fixed if you give me enough parts, time and mechanics," a Pentagon official told United Press International. "We just want our plane back."
