Pataki Unveils $2M Anti-terror Network

Wednesday, 30 January 2002 12:00 AM

Pataki said when complete, the system's 600 computers are expected to provide critical intelligence to the state's 543 police departments as well as related agencies in New York and surrounding states.

The first 30 terminals should be online by the end of February, he said.

"More than 70,00 state and local law enforcement professionals patrol the street of New York State every day, and making them a part of our counter-terrorism efforts will help make all New Yorkers safer and more secure," the Republican governor said.

Pataki said the money to install the remaining computers is contained in his 2002-03 state budget, which is being debated by the Legislature.

Initially, the system will be used to send electronic alerts to the recipients. The user then types in a password and downloads the information, which could range from pictures of suspected terrorists to alerts of their possible targets.

"In our ongoing discussions with local law enforcement officials statewide, it became clear that establishing a secure communication network to provide relevant and timely intelligence was of critical importance," said James Kallstrom, director of the state's Office of Public Security.
