Pataki's Tax Trouble Looms Over the GOP Convention

Thursday, 26 June 2003 12:00 AM

"The man once known for his fiscal conservatism is presiding over a fiscal wreck," says Christopher Grimes of The Financial Times.

The State Legislature's plan to increase taxes is not only killing the New York economy, but it also threatens cloud the GOP's image as the party of tax cuts when Pataki presides over the Republican convention in Sept. 2004.

To be sure, the Empire State's top Republican opposed the tax hikes, which he aptly called "job killers" in an economy still mired in post-9/11 malaise.

The good news: Pataki still has seventeen months to turn the state's lagging economy around. And that may indeed happen, thanks to Bush's tax cuts and declining oil prices as a result of the Iraq war.

Still, even though he was steamrollered on the tax issue by an alliance between Democratic State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Republican Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno and sometime Republican New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the revenue squeeze was implemented on his watch.

The idea of holding the Republican convention in New York was supposed to conjure up memories of Republican leadership in the wake of 9/11. But Democrats are sure to argue that if the GOP wants credit for responding to the terrorist threat, it must accept blame for the New York's state and city fiscal woes as well.

The silver lining for the White House: Pataki's stand against the tax hikes New Yorkers now deplore is sure to make Empire State voters more receptive to tax cutter Bush's brand of economics.
