Palestininas Attack Israeli Post; 6 Dead

Wednesday, 09 January 2002 12:00 AM

The attack occurred early in the morning when a group of Palestinian militants cut through the border fence and attacked an army position near Karim Shalom on the Israeli side of the Gaza Strip border and near the Egyptian border.

An Israeli military source said the attackers entered the post, opened fire and hurled several hand grenades. An Israeli Defense Force patrol arrived at the post and joined the battle, killing both militants.

The source said earlier reports that the militants were actually Palestinian policemen were not correct.

Palestinian sources said four Israeli soldiers were killed and three others were wounded in the attack. Two Palestinians were killed. The IDF won't release any casualty figures until the families are notified.

Israeli radio's Arabic service said an Israeli helicopter was seen landing near the area as well as reinforcements and ambulances.

Palestinian sources said that the two militants were attempting to cross into Israel when Israeli soldiers discovered them.

No group has claimed responsibility for Wednesday's attack.

The attack came one day after Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said that this week has been the quietest since the Intifada began on Sept. 28, 2000.

It was also the first attack on Israeli soldiers in the Gaza Strip since Dec. 16, when Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat called for a stop to all armed and suicide bombings against Israel.
