Palestinians Want New Peace Process, International Guarantees

Sunday, 19 November 2000 12:00 AM

Palestinian Authority Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo told Palestinian radio the earlier negotiations were useless and simply went around in a circle.

"The completely one-sided American position with Israel is also one of the reasons why we don't want to get back to the same rhythm of the previous negotiations," said Abed Rabbo.

Abed Rabbo asked for a conditional return to the peace talks to gain international guarantees for the process, similar to the 1993 Madrid peace talks and the last summit in Sharm el-Sheikh.

"These guarantees must be followed by sending international protection forces to the Palestinian territories to guarantee accurate, honest implementation of the international (U.N.) Resolutions 242 and 338," he said. Both Israel and the Palestinians attended a summit at Camp David in June in a bid to reach a permanent status agreement that would end their historic conflict. They failed to reach a deal.

More than 200 Palestinians and 25 Israelis have been killed in the latest round of violence.
