Palestinian Policeman Killed

Monday, 10 September 2001 12:00 AM

The Israel Defense Forces spokesman said that Sunday night the army fired anti-tank missiles at a Palestinian security forces' blockade and structure in Tamun.

The announcement said the attack was launched, "In response to a recent chain of terrorist acts."

Two Palestinian suicide bombings and a drive-by shooting in Israel and the West bank Sunday claimed seven lives, including the bombers', and injured more than 100 people.

Israeli helicopters attacked Palestinian Authority targets in the West Bank towns of Ramallah, Jenin, Nablus and Jericho on Sunday afternoon in retaliation for attacks earlier Sunday.

The helicopters hit an office belonging to Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, on the outskirts of Ramallah, causing heavy damage.

In Jericho, an installation belonging to the PA general intelligence was targeted. Palestinians reported several injuries. Both buildings were empty at the time of the attack.

The attacks occurred as the Israeli government approved a plan to build fences along parts of the boundary line with the West Bank border, send more troops and install electronic systems.

Most of the West Bank boundary line is not fenced, and it is easy to cross over.

The Palestinian attacks fueled hawkish ministers' demands to call off planned meetings between Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Arafat to discuss ending the violence in the region.

Public Security Minister Uzi Landau, one of the most hawkish ministers in Ariel Sharon's National Unity government, said Sunday that Israel must escalate its attacks so that the Palestinians will pay "a heavy price daily, systematically, all the time," until they call for a cease-fire.
